Traffic & Parking: A Study to Identify Solutions

Project Overview

Traffic, safety, congestion, and parking are perennial hot topics in Rehoboth Beach. The city has contracted with Rossi Group to conduct a comprehensive traffic and transportation study and offer realistic goals and actions to improve the traffic/parking experience in Rehoboth Beach.

At the conclusion of the study, Rossi will present potential improvement options that may include:

citywide speed reductions and traffic-calming measures
traffic capacity and flow enhancements
improvements at strategic intersections
improvements to bicycle and pedestrian facilities
recommendations to better address parking demand

Off Street Permit Parking. It is very frustrating when cars do not pull up to the Yellow Line--they take 2 or 3 parking spaces away from beach goers. Perhaps ticketing would eliminate this inconsiderate practice.

The parking place on each of the corners intersections with stop signs should be removed. It is impossible to see oncoming traffic until you are already into the intersection. It is also very difficult to see cyclists who are often riding between traffic and parked cars so they are obscured from your vision when you pull into the intersection. It's a dangerous and stressful situation.

Not allow any autos on first block and possibly second even, for at least Rehoboth ave, Baltimore & Wilmington. 2) Have a monorail, maybe from Wilmington DE all the way to the Bandstand, with appropriate stops. You know Rt 1 is so bad, always sitting in traffic.

Regardless of the findings of this $200K consultant whose "report" will be finished in April 2024, the Board should immediately take steps to grow revenue from parking ahead of summer 2024. Huge expenses like stormwater repairs, lifeguard office rebuild, and wastewater treatment plant upgrades loom in the City's future. It is well beyond time to lengthen the parking season to closer to that of the Town of Lewes, i.e., May 1st to Oct 15. It is time to eliminate the "free ride" enjoyed by anyone who parks on residential streets after 5 pm in the parking enforcement season. Permits should be required until 10 pm (same end-time as the meters). I was disappointed that the parking parameters were not modified in time for the 2023 season as was implied would be done back in 2022 -- but not too late to rectify this bad decision by getting the 2024 season situated better. Makes no sense that the more appealing oceanfront resort of Rehoboth Beach has a shorter parking enforcement season than the bayside Town of Lewes.
